Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid of the xanthophyll class, having a chemical structure closely related to carotene and isomer of lutein. It is found mainly in corn kernels (where it is responsible for coloring), spinach, broccoli and red radicchio.

The main property of zeaxanthin is related to its ability to absorb solar radiation. An optimal intake of zeaxanthin contributes to good eye health. Due to this action, zeaxanthin would support the well-being of the retina and especially of the macula (the central area of the retina of the human eye, the most sensitive to light stimuli) and of the fovea (concentric region inside the macula).

It is also used as a food pigment.
